Today, students and their teachers are more connected than ever. While this is incredibly beneficial for students, teachers often find themselves with even less personal time outside of the classroom as a result of keeping in touch with their struggling students. While their willingness for their students won’t ever seem to waver, many teachers struggle with taking agency over their own time and keeping it personal. When time spent outside of the classroom is being used to check phones and laptops throughout the day and into the evening to ensure their students are receiving the attention they deserve, this can be detrimental to teachers. While it’s hard to keep teachers from offering this level of care to their students, there needs to be some sort of balance. Establishing time frames for responding to these out-of-class communications is a great place to start. In doing so, teachers can use their personal time to truly find some respite and work toward enhancing their mental and emotional health. Establishing a peace of mind outside of the classroom is a necessary part of how teachers can remain grounded throughout the school year. For more information on how to better separate from your students outside of the classroom and practice meaningful self-care, please see the infographic supported alongside this post.
